When you are vacationing or just passing through, be sure to stop here!! It was our first visit and we had a great time. We started with cocktails. Our good looking waiter Dave hooked me up with an artistic garnished Rum Runner...excellent recommendation on his part. Thanks Dave!! Our food was good and filling. Not too greasy so we didn't leave feeling awful. Great Mackinaw eating experience.

The waiter was nice, however very neglectful. We had to go to the bar several times to ask for things. My sister's burger was over cooked, and my burrito was way more beans than beef and very bland. We had to diners and a child's meal, with an appetizer. Or bill was $35!!! We all had water... Definitely not worth the price! The atmosphere did not make up for it. It is a bar restaurant so of course noisy, but people (mostly staff) kept going in and out of the door next to us which we are assuming was so they could smoke cigarettes because every time someone opened the door we got a face full of smoke. Very disgusting when you're trying to enjoy your meal. unfortunately we will not be returning.

Went to the keyhole for my birthday with my boyfriend and best friend. It was rather busy so we sat at the bar instead of a table. When we were presented our bill at the end, it was all on one tab. The waitress informed us that she could not split it up because we were sitting at the bar and not a table. I don't know what computer system they use which they can't form separate bills for 3 people. If this is the case, being informed this when we sat down before we ordered would've been courteous. Instead, one of us had to put the entire bill on our credit card because there was nothing our waitress could do. She offered little sympathy or explanation and made it seem like it should've been common knowledge to us. Will not go back to this establishment after this experience.

A friend who lives part-time in Mackinac City suggested we grab a late meal at the Key Hole. It offers a good selection of beers, some local, some national, and very good burgers. The burgers are not frozen patties. They make them in the kitchen. My only complaint was the volume of the music system, which made it hard to hear and caused patrons to speak very loudly to be heard. This is not a tourist joint. They cater to locals.

Busy but wait was short... Staff is friendly. Ordered blackened whitefish baked potato and veggie medley. My partner ordered perch basket. Mine was delicious, hers was a bit greasy... Overall very happy with experience.. Somewhat pee Ed that the wifi is not available.. EVERYONE makes free wifi available .. I recommend it on the whole.. Great atmosphere

Great place to hang out. I gave it a four star because we wanted to order food around 11:30pm and they told us they didn't have food. Seems like they'd have the kitchen open longer on a Friday night.

Stopped in for lunch. They were really busy. Service was slow, but our server did a pretty good job. The food was your typical bar food, but was quite good. The Chicken Club and Italian Sub are definitely with trying.

Came up to Mackinaw for the day. Decided to check this little place out after getting off the ferry with our group of four. Pretty busy so we sat at the bar. Very good service, food was good, prices were very reasonable. I had the reuben which was excellent. My wife had the perch sandwich, which she also enjoyed. For the price and srevice, you really can't beat it.

Not impressed. The food and place just seems dirty and unattractive. Cool the place has keys everywhere, but the tables, walls, and floor are pretty worn and have a dirty tint to them. The place needs a good scrubbing. The food was on the bad side of mediocre. My girlfriend got a bean burrito that was sloppily thrown together. I got a chicken sandwich. The chicken breast had seen better days. The bun was wet with something on the bottom, which didn't sit well with me.

Excellent Bar Food. Excellent Service. Great atmosphere. Gotta Love a place the locals go too.

No complaints! Great service, food was well prepared and very good. Onion rings are really good. I had the perch dinner which was also very good. I prefer pan fried perch to deep fried, but I'd definitely go here again!

Went for a couple of draft beers at a very late night. Fast and friendly service :) Quite a unique decor, funny signs and the plush dog on the top shelf is so cool!

This is THE locals' place, but be not afraid... Great food, good friends, great times. Chicken wings are a specialty. Ask the waitstaff for what's best. Love you guys!!

Food was "ok" i had caesar wrap. It had little dressing so dry. Our. First waiter had attitude. We asked for kids menu and he was very matter of a about telling us it was for 10 and under. All the traveling we have done, we have never been questioned on ordering from kids menu. We had to come out and ask him to see one which by the way had no age listed on menu. I dont think he was happy after that. We actually had a waitress as well. She was pleasant. There are too many places to pick from here so i wouldn't go back. Seems to have alot of regulars there anyway.

What a nice find here in downtown Mackinaw City. We arrived for dinner (party of 5) on a Sunday night. There was a 15 minute wait or so, but that wasn't too surprising since we were in the middle of the summer tourist season. The beers were cold and the food was quite good. My steak was a good cut and cooked perfectly. Not a ton of seasoning/flavor, but nothing a little A1 couldn't help with. My wife's burger was very good as well. Fresh meat, cooked to perfection. The peel and eat shrimp was a big hit with everyone and we were really close to getting a 2nd order! Mmmmm. There was a pool table and a couple of fun games in the back to keep the kiddies occupied while we finished our dinners/drinks. Lots of TVs all over so keeping an eye on the Olympics was easy. The decor in this place was fantastic! (I won't spoil it for any future visitors, but it's unlike anything I've ever seen before) We'll be back next year for sure!

One of my favorite places in Mackinaw City - this time I ordered up the Perch Sandwich. Three large size pieces of perch, with some iceberg/tomato/mayo, on a burger bun. Very simple, yet sublime in it's flavor. The perch was very fresh - and this is hard to fake. Bar food at it's finest, and freshest. Great service, and always a cold beer in my hand.

  • Missy C.

I like the decor, the food is decent, but at the same time nothing 'special'. I would have liked to see more draft beers, with so many craft breweries in Michigan I think they should step up their game. But thank you keyhole for having purse hooks under the bar, that's always appreciated.

  • Brian C.

Burger okay. Nothing special. Waitress made a mistake on the bill and made a snide comment hat he wishes we wold have looked on our bill before we paid. We wish she would have looked at the bill she gave us before she gave it to us. It had several charges that were not ours b Experience left a sour taste in our mouths. Younger waitress who needs better training in customer service. Will not be retuning.

  • Meghan L.

Wow!!! Awesome customer service and amazing Bar Food!!!!!! This is a small time feeling to a bar Felt like there was a judgement free zone and everyone was there to have a good time have some drinks and eat! I had the Cheeseburger... OMG amazing. We also tried the Chicken and Dumpling soup. I am speach less in the soup. As a cook myself was floored by the flavors in the foods that came from a bar kitchen. Will be back next time we are in town!

  • Dallas M.

Decent food. Disappointed with the wait staff because our waitress asked us if fries were okay with our orders, without telling ya that they were extra. We got charged $3.49 for a side salad that I thought came with the wrap. Absolutely ridiculous. She should have told us all the sides were extra once she suggested and asked what we wanted! I wasn't going to even order a side. Otherwise, decent place. Good wraps. Chicken salad wrap was awesome and the chicken chipotle was great too, just very spicy.

    (3)
  • McKenzie M.

Decent food, great portion sizes.awesome bar idea, love the keys EVERYWHERE! Did wait awhile for someone to seat us, and a little slower service than I'd like. Decent place.

    (3)
  • Jay M.

Very good food. Perch is excellent! Great service even at a busy time. Fun place. The collection of keys is very impressive. Solid 4 stars.

    (4)
  • Michael D.

Great food great service. Like everyone before me has said the perch and whitefish are the specialty here. I also got the ribs, which were fantastic. Our server was super friendly and our wait was only a few minutes at prime dining hours. We will come here again, just not bridge walk weekend.

  • Vicki C.

Ordered a Ruben and split it with my husband. It was not only enough for two people, it was one of the best Rubens I've had. Also had a cup of their chicken rice soup too and it was so good. Prices were also good along with the very fast service. Can't wait to come back when I'm in town.

  • Bill G.

Don't judge a book by its cover. In a city where restaurant hype is far greater than the quality of the food, the Keyhole is an understated winner. Good food at a fair price. Yes, it's a bar, but it works for kids if you go during normal eating hours. Pass by the others and drop in to the Keyhole.

    (3)
  • Chandra P.

One good thing I can say is they had fast service and our waitress was decent...our potato skins were burnt but were home-made and still tasted pretty awesome. Skip the nachos. They came in a fajita pan and I seriously think I counted 5 tortilla chips after digging through the lettuce and giant cubes of onion. My husband had baked fish and fries. His response was, "If you like fish, you'll like this." and explained later that the fish tasted very "fishy". They don't carry local Michigan wine and the wine I had was flat and tasted like fermented water. (should have gotten beer.) They were PACKED during dinner time - we had to leave and come back a couple hours later. I was expecting a dive...just don't have dinner there.

  • Des D.

Husband and I stopped in during our weekend trip to Mackinaw City and Mackinack Island and loved it. Service was superb. Lots of TVs (important to my husband who was dying to watch Tigers playoffs against the Yankees). Cool theme- never seen so many keys in one place. Shots could have been stronger- didn't seem to have much alcohol in them. Drinks were ok. Overall were glad we spent time here.. great local place.

    (4)
  • Kevin W.

Good food, but service was horrid to say the least. If you are looking for good seafood and a burger this is a good choice. But be warned that the service is not very good and the place is on the dirty side.

This is REALLY the only BAR in town. There is a place that says it is an Irish bar, but.....shame!!!, Face it, this is a tourist town and most places serve fudge, ice cream or some drink named after an Indian who never really lived here. The Keyhole is...just a bar and in being such it is a breath of fresh air in this town. The staff are relatively disinterested in you , but will serve you with some prodding. To be fair, Shannon actually pays attention and has a personality... The dudes...well...they get distracted,, but still nice people. So, as this was my only chance at this part of the world, I had the whitefish...oh, yes, do it!! Really good. This is a great BAR. If you want ferns or karaoke or something equally cheesy, this is not for you, but if you want fair priced drinks, good people and good food... And maybe a Tigers game on the the TV, this is the spot. On a 1-5 for REAL BARS...4.5.

  • Brian C.

Food was OK. I had the Parmesan Encrusted Walleye. It was good. Wife had fried shrimp, it was "just OK". Our daughter had a kids pizza that was fair. Son ordered clam chowder but they didn't have any so he ordered chicken noodle soup. After a very long wait our food showed up minus my son's soup. Waitress apologized, but after such a long wait, it seemed odd. She offered a fast response for whatever he wanted "on the house." The service recovery was good.

This has been one of my favorite spots in Mackinaw city for 2 decades now. The sandwiches are delicious, try the whitefish and the reuben. Also recommend the fried fish appetizer. A must do in the City. You will love the decor.

Great bar. Watch for expensive ho-hum specials. Paid way too much for fried perch. Friendly bar staff. Neat place to visit.

    (4)
  • Seth E.

Beer menu was horrible, portions were small, couldn't serve onion rings for some reason despite having them on them menu. Service was very good though.

I always go to keyhole with family. It is a nice place to eat and have good times. The food is also very delicious. The keyhole has the best hot wings.

    (5)
  • Amber E.

Great reuben! Nice atmosphere, loved the pretzel bites and slaw. Service was fast, and even though they had a wait, it was short.

  • Tonia O.

This will be a short review. Average service. (Hi...can I take your order....need anything else?) Average food. (had a white fish sandwich...) Average price. ($8-10) Slightly below average interior. (All those damn keys in there, I wanted a tetanus shot...) I wouldn't have chose this place, except everything is essentially closed during the month of October in MI. This is definitely more of a family neighborhood bar. I can understand and appreciate its charm in that regard, but as a tourist, its not one I'd put on my list.

    (2)
  • Derrick E.

Friendly service and excellent food. Generous portions on the sandwiches and some of the best onion rings I've ever had.

    (4)
  • Sara D.

The Keyhole has the most delicious grilled ham and Swiss on rye. We stop here anytime we are in the area and are never disappointed with the quality of the bar food. Another delightful perk: Oberon on tap.

    (5)
  • Cristina F.

Quality price no good at all! It is a bar so do not expect restaurant food. Whitefish was sold as the star dish but it comes with more panfried than fish! The decoration was cool, that's why I am giving two stars.Recommended just for drinks.

The two and only times I've been to Mackinaw City, I've managed to find myself at the Keyhole. This past time, it was probably around 10:30 pm and it seemed that nearly everything was shut down for the evening, when we saw the beckoning neon "Bar" sign. For such a touristy area. Keyhole seems like a nice, friendly kind of dive bar. Low lit and comfortable. Just the way I like 'em. The place is pretty large, and hasn't been crowded or full of douchey tourists when we've been there. We've always had great service from the bartenders and seem to end up meeting chatty locals, which add a touch of flavor. Since there don't seem to be many bars in the area, you can't really go wrong at the Keyhole.

I kinda liked this place. However, before I start this review it's only fair to say... with every restaurant down here being a 4 star review... this will be either 3 stars or 5 stars, depending on above or below average... if everyone's special, no one is special. That being said... I like this place. It's a bar/ dive. We were seated quickly. When the couple of "blues" tried to push past us and steal our seat, the waiter cleaning our table politely didn't let them steal it because of their age (huge plus, because I don't believe in age discrimination against 30 year olds! LOL). We sat at a table with it's own dimmer switch (big plus). Lots of things on the wall to read... hey! It's a bar/ dive! The bartender was quick (although the pours could use a little work). They food was fresh... and we were happy. I had the Perch and Ribs combo. The fish was fresh, the ribs were meaty, and there was a ton of food. The fries were good. We also had the Reuben (which was an excellent suggestion by the waitress) and had it bunless. It was delicious! Highly recommend it! Although this isn't the place for everyone. First... As you can see by the 3 letters above the door... IT'S A BAR! Expect bar smell, bar attitude, and bar floors. Second, it's a DIVE! Expect DIVE BAR attitude, questionable language (on the walls and from the patrons) and it's dark. Third, if you like this stuff (like I do) then it's wonderful! EAT HERE! 5 STARS... to break away from the crowd!

  • Veda S.

My food was pretty good. I had the blackened whitefish. It had a little too much blackened seasoning for me but it was still good... The food came out really fast. The slaw was ok salad was so-so. My friend had the perch which she said was good also.. I'm guessing if you stick to the fish you can't go wrong.. Like I said in my tip DO NOT get margarita. It taste like she poured sweet and sour mix on top of ice with absolutely NO tequila involved!!.. The bathroom had absolutely no hot water but they had a great sugar scrub for your hands!! Lol..

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews. After a long day we decided to come here to get some dinner since it was quite close to where we were staying. When you go in you seat yourself at whatever table is empty. This place is surprisingly big with pool tables and other games in the back. Food is basic bar food, nothing great. We started with the fried mushrooms which were quite bland. No spices or anything, just mushrooms dipped in a basic batter which was probably used for everything that they fry. I had the chipotle chicken wrap. It was quite similar to something you would be able to get at a fast food joint. Husband had a cheese steak wrap. His was super greasy on the outside and was dripping grease. While mine was barely warm, his was way too hot to eat. The onion rings he got with his wrap were dipped in the same bland batter as the mushrooms. His beer smelled like toilet water. Gross. The people sitting at the bar were older local regulars who seemed to have been drinking for hours on end. Maybe we needed to be drunk to enjoy our meal as much as they.

This place is alright! It does have nice sports bar environment with good choices of food. The price is affordable, but just nothing in particular stood out during my visit here.

This is a great local place, recommended to my wife and I by a local. My wife and I split an order of the ribs and a pile of wings. The wings are amazing and rival the ribs. They have a sweet and spicy sauce that will leave you licking your fingers! The staff was great and made sure we were well taken care of. Stop in for a drink and a bite to eat.

The Keyhole has been around forever, and is much more of a local landmark than certain other places claim to be. The current owners of the Keyhole have been there for over 25 years, and the Keyhole has been around since long before that. It's relaxed, with good food and cheap drinks, and friendly staff. It's got that dive bar feel and is a little smoky, but it's clean and, well... fantastic. I'm not kidding when I say generations of my family have been patrons at the Keyhole.

    (5)
  • Jerry V.

We have been going to the Keyhole Bar for many years, and I can say with great confidence they have the best burger in the north, by far! The owner is usually our waiter, and the sandwiches are fabulous, to say the least. Not only do they have the best burgers, but the whitefish sandwich is also among the best we've had. They even offer un-aldulterated, plain french fries, which is a plus in my book. There is way too much smoke in the place, which is a minus, but the tap beer is always good and inexpensive and the place is friendly and comfortable. Don't miss the Keyhole, and leave a key if you get the urge.

  • Angela S.

Excellent food and a great atmosphere. Tons and I do mean TONS of keys and key chains everywhere. Service is good and they really hustle during the busy times, but you may have to wait a bit. Try the Fisherman's Consolation. Perch or whitefish sandwich, fries, and some of the best cole slaw I've ever had. It isn't homemade but if you like KFC slaw you'll love theirs. My favorite place to grab a quick bite and a beer in Mackinac City.

  • Dave D.

This is always our stop for great bloody marys. The burgers are fantastic and the food is always spot on. Great place to hang out and chat ...just a great watering hole

  • Robin T.

Very friendly, good service. Husband enjoyed whitefish sandwich, I had grilled reuben. My favorite part of the meal were the onion rings which are homemade. Not greasy, not too much batter and the onions were biteable. Nice bar for a decent meal. Would go there again next time we're up there.

This is one of the coolest places that I've been to in a while. This place was recommended so we stopped in for dinner. Not expecting much from a bar that serves food, we didn't have high expectations but we were really blown away. The food was excellent. I had smothered chicken and my bf had a strip steak both of which were great. If you dine in here, or are just having a drink, take the time to look around. There are tons of keys, key tags, key chains, etc. It is really cool and makes you wonder where they got it all from!

    (5)
  • Judy S.

Perch was great! The coleslaw was also excellent. Good food, good service. We definitely recommend the Keyhole.

    (4)
  • Shane M.

Felt like an alien when we walked into the place, definitely a local hangout and they were not welcome stares (from the customers). The bar tender was cool though and recommended a delicious beer, didn't stick around to sample the food.

We came here twice while camping at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campgrounds. This place is super unpretentious and the food was decent. We were glad this place existed because we definitely didn't prepare to cook food on our campfire.

  • Shawn P.

Worst ribs I've ever had at a restaurant!!! My wife's steak was delicious. Potato skins were above par. Beer battered shrimp was very good. The ribs, however, were downright disgusting! They were either slow oven-cooked in some type of BBQ sauce or par boiled. Whichever method they used it didn't allow the fat to render out so it was like chewing moist fat...sooooo gross!!! To make matters worse, when I told the woman who came to our table (not our waitress, maybe some form of management...I'm not sure since she never identified herself), she left and came back with our bill and said "I was able to take 50% off the ribs for you"! Really?! I didn't even eat them, yet I got charged 1/2! She didn't even have the decency to apologize or even ask why I thought they were so bad. After I voiced my complaint, our waitress never even came back to our table. Doubt I'll come back, and I'm semi-local (Petoskey). There are waaaay better choices in Mac City.

  • Bridgette Z.

I love the food and set up of the bar, but I hated the service! Granted, this is a dive bar but they were super busy on a Friday night, you would think they would have more than a couple servers/bartenders. I could tell a lot of locals hang out at this place so we did feel kind of awkward when we first walked in (visiting from Detroit). Anyway, the place has a really cool key theme inside.. a key mural, keychains from past visitors, keys outlining the door, etc. The menu is pretty big for a bar. We had the battered mushrooms and jalapeno poppers to start. Both came out super fast and they were really hot and we both burned our mouths LOL but they were both really good I like the batter they use. I had a wrap with shaved beef, veggies and cheese and horseradish sauce, I forget the name but it was soooo good!! I was really surprised. My husband had the reuben and he also said it was really good. We were pleasantly surprised with the food here since the outside kinda looks like a dump. Give it a try, its a nice little spot with good food and a huge drink menu as well.

You MUST go here, anytime...any night or day!!! Awesome staff and even better food! Friendly staff, GREAT beer (I had the Cheboygan Ale EVERY time I stopped in)....Tiger games were on and it was a blast...!!!!

I was stuck in Mackinaw City on a charter. The locals recommended this place. The service was above average and the food above average. My rating probably reflects my desire to leave. Overall, it was better than the three previous places I ate at when on the trip.

Went to the Keyhole Bar & Grill 15 years ago and had what I remember to be the best burger EVER. Just had a chance to go back (Jan. 2013) and my memory was not wrong had that exact same great burger. Also had some of the best light golden onion rings I can remember. Service was excellent and atmosphere fun. In the middle of winter there are not many choices in Mackinaw City, if I had it to do over again I would have gone to The Keyhole both nights I was in town and skipped Dixie Saloon.

One of our favorite places to eat in Mackinaw City. The whole city is so touristy it is nice to get out of it and eat some good honest food at decent bar. The beer was cold and the service was quick and friendly. The Cheboygan Light House Ale was awesome.

Knowing that we were going to spend a night in Mackinaw City, I had been looking for a good restaurant for my parents and I to eat at. I had actually been reading some of the reviews on Yelp and decided to give this place a shot. I must say, I was really looking for more of a sit-down restaurant, but Mackinaw City really doesn't have much to offer in regards to sit-down. This was one of the reasons we opted for this bar. I definitely left satisfied after eating here. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was fun. It was more of a dive bar however, so do not expect anything fancy. My food was delicious. I had a whitefish sandwich with fries and coleslaw. I loved every bit of it. My mother ate some chicken fingers, and I was even impressed with those - a dish that most places can't get wrong. They must have been using some quality chicken. The only downside to this place was that it did not seem to have enough staff, but our waitress was diligent and served us as timely as she could. If I am in Mackinaw City again, I will definitely revisit.

It's funny that there are no reviews of this bar, because nearly ALL the reviews of the nearby Dixie Saloon suggest Mackinaw City folk skip Dixie and go straight to the Keyhole instead. This is exactly what I hoped a dive bar in northern Michigan would be. Only with more keys. It was crowded and lively, but not loud or obnoxious. It's pretty dark inside and sort of smoky--the smoking and non-smoking sections appear to run parallel to each other through the place, so not sure how much good that does. Our server was valiant: she had a very serious looking arm injury (huge bandages up past the elbow) and could only bring our drinks one at a time, but she was attentive enough and friendly despite clearly being in pain. The walls are COVERED with old keys (above the kitchen window "Keychyn" is spelled out IN KEYS), some with keychains, some without. One of the tables is even shaped like a keyhole. They RAN with this theme and it works. We almost wanted to leave OUR keys to add to the collection, but then we would have had no way of getting home. The Keyhole serves food (and late too, till at least 11) but we didn't eat any so I can't comment on it. Will say: I am not a PBR fan, but they have it on tap for $1.50. A pint of beer for $1.50?? Yes, it's true. Our Dixie Saloon experience was sort of yooper-hipster-clubber-hilarious-weird, but the Keyhole was just chill. Next time I find myself in Mackinaw City, I'd make a point to spend more time here and less elsewhere in town.

This place is an oasis in the culinary desert of Mackinaw City. Cold drafts, good nachos, quick, friendly service - what more could you want in a bar? We ran out of time or we would have stayed for dinner - it looked and smelled good.

    Great Beer!!! Nice bar!

  • Valerie K.

Great atmosphere, food and service in a kitschy- tourist-town. The place was packed when we visited, but we were able to find a table and were quickly greeted by our waitress. Great offerings on the menu; your basic burger and beer bar. A solid offering of beers and ciders. A definite must visit.

Very unique bar in Mackinaw City. My wife and I stopped in to have a Summer Shandy. Friendly people. Wish we would have planned on eating because the food looked and smelled awesome. Must be good food because the people were coming in steady. The bar itself is covered in keys. Should have taken a picture. I'm an idiot.
